MANHATTAN, Kan. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team erased a two-set deficit, but was downed by an 8-0 run in the fifth set to ultimately fall, 3-2, at Kansas State on Wednesday night. The loss dropped the Sooners to 8-15 overall and 2-9 in the Big 12, while the Wildcats improved to 16-8 and 8-4.
Oklahoma was narrowly defeated in the first two sets, 23-25 and 27-29. The Sooners forced a fifth by winning the next two, 25-21 and 25-23. Oklahoma got the match to a fifth set by holding off a 7-1 K-State run to win the fourth. In the fifth, the Sooners held an early 4-1 lead that forced a Wildcat timeout. At the switch, Oklahoma led 8-5 and later went up 11-7 before Kansas State ended the night with eight consecutive points.
Senior outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) led all players with 17 kills and recorded 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. She was one of four OU players to register a double-double.
Sophomore middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) knocked down 15 kills with a career-high 11 blocks, while hitting .323. Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward (Coppell, Texas) went for 13 kills and 15 digs with six blocks, while junior middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) added 12 kills.
For the Wildcats, Brooke Sassin and Bryna Vogel led the way with 15 kills. Sassin added 16 digs and Vogel added 14.
Freshman setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.) made her second career start for the Sooners and dished out a season-high 55 assists along with 15 digs for her second double-double of the year. Sophomore libero Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) led the OU defense with 20 digs.
Katie Brand picked up 60 assists for K-State with 11 digs, while Kersten Kober led all players with 25 digs.
The Sooners return to action Sunday on the road at Baylor at 2:00 pm for their final road contest of the season.
