NORMAN – University of Oklahoma redshirt senior wrestler Cody Brewer claimed a victory at the 50th annual 2015 NWCA All-Star Classic, while redshirt junior Clark Glass dropped his bout. The event was held inside Georgia Tech's Hank McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta.
In an exciting 141-pound match, Brewer grabbed a last-second takedown en route to a 13-12 decision over Oklahoma State's Dean Heil. Brewer took the early lead after posting a takedown with five seconds left in the opening period to go up 3-0. An experimental three-point takedown rule was put in place for the NWCA All-Star Classic.
Heil took control of the second period, recording an early escape and takedown. Brewer escaped for his only points of the period but was taken down again to make the score 7-4 in favor of Heil heading into the final frame.
Brewer began the third period with a reversal, but Heil quickly tallied an escape and a takedown to push his lead to 11-6. Brewer recorded an escape and a takedown, then Heil escaped again for a 12-10 advantage. With just seconds left in the match, Brewer registered a takedown to make the final score 13-12. Brewer's performance earned him the NWCA All-Star Classic Outstanding Wrestler Award.
"Cody (Brewer) wrestled with a lot of heart tonight," OU Head Coach Mark Cody said. "He was relentless in his attack, and if you stay offensive you're never out of the match. We teach it and we preach it to our entire team."
Glass dropped a 9-2 decision to NC State's Max Rohskopf in the 165-pound contest. The bout remained scoreless after the first frame, but Rohskopf tallied a four-point nearfall with 25 seconds left in the second. Glass escaped to make the score 4-1 in favor of Rohskopf heading into the final period.
Rohskopf recorded an escape and a takedown early in the third period to go up 8-1. Glass grabbed a penalty point late in the frame, but Rohskopf secured the riding time point to finish the match at 9-2.
"Clark Glass got himself into a tough situation in the second and couldn't rebound," Cody explained. "To have a preseason match like this is going to be valuable for Clark going forward because he knows where he needs to improve. Both Cody and Clark were aggressive and I'm proud of the way they represented us here. We have a lot of work to do now preparing for the season."
Brewer's win was the first for the Sooners in the NWCA All-Star Classic since Andrew Howe defeated Penn State's Matt Brown in the 174-pound bout in 2013. The Sooners are now 27-26 all-time in the event.
Brewer and Glass will return to the mat Tuesday Nov. 10 when the Sooners hold their annual Red/White Scrimmage.
