NORMAN — Fueled by a career performance from junior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade, the Oklahoma soccer team fought to a 0-0 draw in two overtimes against No. 4 West Virginia on Friday night at John Crain Field.
The Sooners (8-4-2 overall, 1-0-2 Big 12) are riding a seven-match unbeaten streak, going 5-0-2 in that stretch. West Virginia has an 11-1-1 record on the season, including a 2-0-1 mark in Big 12 play.
Stade anchored an OU defense that, despite allowing an opponent season-high 33 shots, held the powerful West Virginia offense scoreless. In a full 110 minutes in goal, Stade had a career-high 16 saves. Her previous best was seven, which she achieved four other times, including earlier this season in a win at Oklahoma State.
The shutout was Stade's sixth of the year and fifth in the last six matches. In the 107th minute, sophomore forward Amandine Pierre-Louis took one of West Virginia's best offensive looks of the night, but Stade extended and prevented the shot from sailing over her head, preserving the draw.
“Across the board we knew we would have to be good tonight and when Kassidie (Stade) was called upon, she was very confident in what she was doing,” fourth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said. “She continues to show promise that her potential suggests she has. I'm proud of her for getting through tonight and the way that she did it and the fight that she showed, and long may it continue.”
This season, the Sooners have played five overtime contests, four of which have gone two extra periods. In those overtime games, OU has posted a 0-3-2 record.
The Sooners finished with seven total shots, three of which were on goal. Junior forward Liz Keester led the way with two, while junior defender Rachel Ressler, junior midfielder Jemma Cota, sophomore defender/forward Jordyn Knox-Webster and freshman forward/midfielder Kaylee Dao each added a shot.
The Mountaineers were the fifth OU opponent ranked within the top 25 of the NSCAA/Continental Tires poll this season. OU is now 1-2-2 in such matches.
Potter said his squad has shown “great competitiveness to the game” this season, which began with the work the Sooners put in during the summer to place themselves in a position to compete. Now, the next step is winning some of these close matches against highly-ranked teams.
“When you do that (compete) against a very talented West Virginia team, you have to take some kind of joy in that that your work has been rewarded,” Potter said. “What we have to do though is figure out how to turn this into a little bit something more than that. That's the lesson here. What you do and every day what we work for dictates that. Ultimately, overall we can take something positive from tonight and move on to Sunday.”
The Sooners are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 11, when they travel to Lawrence, Kan., to face the Kansas Jayhawks. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CT, and the match will stream on WatchESPN.
