LAWRENCE, Kan. In its first Big 12 road match of the season, the Oklahoma soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at Kansas on Sunday afternoon inside Rock Chalk Park.

The Sooners (8-5-2 overall, 1-1-2 Big 12) and the Jayhawks (8-5-1 overall, 3-1-0 Big 12) finished with nearly identical offensive numbers. OU recorded 15 shots, including six that were on goal, while Kansas had 13 total and four on goal.

The match remained scoreless for almost the entire 90 minutes before Kansas got on the board with a goal from senior forward Ashley Williams in the 89th minute. On a long ball downfield, Williams gained control and knocked it in from 10 yards out. Freshman midfielder Grace Hagan assisted on the score.

“While we are disappointed in the result, I'm encouraged by the way we took the game to a good Kansas team on the road,” fourth-year OU head coach Matt Potter said. “This is a good lesson for the upcoming games. The beauty of the conference is it challenges you top to bottom to be at your best, players and coaches. That's why we all enjoy being part of the Big 12.”

The Kansas goal was just the third given up by the OU defense in its last eight contests. The loss ended a seven-game unbeaten streak for the Sooners, during which they went 5-0-2.

Freshman Kaylee Dao led OU with three shots, while junior midfielder Shiloh Price and sophomore defender/forward Jordyn Knox-Webster finished with two apiece.

In a full 90 minutes in goal, OU junior goalkeeper Kassidie Stade finished with three saves. She fell to 6-5-2 on the season with the loss. Kansas sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Dobyns recorded six saves in the match and moved to 8-4-1 on the year.

Throughout the match, the Sooners had some good offensive looks but just could not connect. One of their best opportunities came in the 51st minute when sophomore forward Chelsea Jackson launched a shot that just barely found the crossbar.

“Clearly we contributed to the game," Potter said. "When opportunities present themselves, you have to take them and in turn you have to minimize your opponents'. Sometimes you can be on the wrong side of close ones, and we felt that was today. We look forward to the opportunity to put this behind us next week in another challenging environment.”

The Sooners continue Big 12 play on the road with a contest at Baylor on Friday, Oct. 16. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. CT.
