NORMAN – University of Oklahoma Vice President and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione and Head Wrestling Coach Mark Cody announced the 2015-16 OU wrestling schedule Monday.
The season, which features three home contests before Christmas and three after, is highlighted by two Bedlam matchups as well as duals with new conference members Northern Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota State.
“With the level we want to wrestle at we have to go in for the best competition,” Cody said. “With the new conference restructure we have several new teams coming in and I felt it would be beneficial to help our conference and our sport to bring some of these new teams in immediately.”
OU will hold its annual Red/White Scrimmage at 6 p.m. on Nov. 10 inside McCasland Field House before heading to Albany, N.Y., on Nov. 15 for the Northeast Duals, marking the official start of competition.
The Sooners are slated for two duals this season with in-state rival Oklahoma State, the first coming on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. in Norman and the second in Stillwater, Okla., on Friday, Feb. 5. Time details for the Stillwater contest will be announced at a later date.
OU's home schedule features five additional duals against Northern Colorado (Nov. 19), Lehigh (Dec. 20), American (Jan. 24) and South Dakota State (Feb. 14). The Sooners will compete against Iowa State on Jan. 22 at the Beauty and the Beast event inside Lloyd Noble Center. The event, held in conjunction with the OU women's gymnastics team, features a split-floor wrestling dual and gymnastics meet.
The Sooners will travel to Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Invitational on Dec. 4 before competing in their final tournament, the Midlands, on Dec. 29 and 30 at Evanston, Ill.
The Sooners have only two Big 12 road matchups, coming on Jan. 9 and Jan. 17 against Wyoming and West Virginia, respectively. Other road contests include Michigan (Nov. 22), Bucknell (Jan. 15), Missouri (Jan. 30) and Oregon State (Feb. 11).
“We won't have any surprises by the time we get to the Big 12 Championships and the NCAA tournament,” Cody explained. “We wrestle Oklahoma State twice and we'll see Iowa State here and then West Virginia. And then with the teams who are new additions to our conference, there won't be any surprises. A lot of times those bigger matches come down to individual strategies and this schedule definitely gives us a chance to put together those strategies by the time the championship season rolls around."
Following regular season action, the Big 12 Championship will be held Mar. 4-5 inside the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. OU will then travel to Madison Square Garden in New York City for the 2016 NCAA Championships, slated for March 17-19.
