NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team snapped a four-game slide with a 3-0 win over Texas Tech at McCasland Field House on Wednesday night. The Sooners improved to 8-12 overall and 2-6 in the Big 12, while the Red Raiders dropped to 13-10 and 2-7.
Oklahoma trailed 20-15 in the first when head coach Santiago Restrepo used his second timeout. From there, the Sooners finished the set on a 12-5 run to claim the first, 27-25. OU cruised to a 25-19 win in the second, hitting .324, and finished out the night with a 25-23 win in the third.
Restrepo compared his team's effort to their five-set loss in Lubbock a month ago. “We played at a much higher level and competed for every point. The effort was their tonight. It was good.”
Redshirt-junior outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) led all players with 12 kills, seven of which came in the second, on a .269 attack rate to go with nine digs. Tech's Lauren Douglass finished second among all players at 10 kills on a .350 attack rate.
“[The outside hitters] did pretty good,” Restrepo assessed of the attack. “I just thought that Kierra [Holst] was trying to do too much instead of placing the ball or taking some off.”
For the match, the Sooners outhit the Red Raiders, .235-.217. Katy Keenan hit a match-high .583 for Texas Tech and sophomore middle blocker Marion Hazelwood (Beach City, Texas) led Oklahoma at .333 on nine kills.
Senior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) dished out 38 assists and picked up nine digs for OU. Sophomore libero Rachel Manriquez (Edmond, Okla.) led the defense with 14 digs; a match-high.
The Sooners return to action on Saturday, October 31 when they hit the road to face Iowa State at 12:00 pm.
