NORMAN — Despite some impressive individual showings, the University of Oklahoma wrestling team fell to No. 8 Iowa State, 26-18, Saturday afternoon inside McCasland Field House.

The Sooners fell to 6-6 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 competition, while the Cyclones improved to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in conference contests. OU grabbed wins at 125 pounds, 157 pounds, 174 pounds and heavyweight.

The Sooners got on the board first as freshman Ryan Millhof tallied his first career win inside McCasland with a 3-2 decision of Iowa State redshirt sophomore Kyle Larson at 125 pounds.

Iowa State then rattled off three straight wins to secure the advantage. At 133 pounds, No. 2 Cody Brewer suffered his first loss of the season, falling to No. 6 Earl Hall by a fall in 1:02.

At 141 pounds, Iowa State freshman Dante Rodriguez topped OU freshman Trae Blackwell by 17-6 major decision, while the 149-pound match saw No. 14 Gabe Moreno defeat OU redshirt freshman Shayne Tucker by decision, 9-4.

No. 11 Justin DeAngelis put the Sooners back in the dual as he cut the Cyclones' lead to 13-9 with a fall in 6:37 of redshirt senior Luke Goettl in the 157-pound match. DeAngelis now sits at 17-3 overall on the season.

Facing the fourth-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds, redshirt sophomore Clark Glass fell by 5-0 decision to Iowa State's Michael Moreno.

The 174-pound bout featured ranked opponents in No. 20 Matt Reed and No. 11 Tanner Weatherman. Reed, an OU redshirt sophomore, secured a narrow 4-3 decision. Initially, Weatherman was awarded a takedown as time expired in the match and would have won after securing the riding time point. However, review showed that Reed's elbow hit the mat first and no points were given to the Cyclone.

No. 15 Lelund Weatherspoon of Iowa State downed freshman Brooks Climmons by 8-0 major decision at 184 pounds before No. 2 Kyven Gadson defeated freshman Andrew Dixon by fall in 5:58 at 197 pounds.

At heavyweight, No. 12 Ross Larson recorded his 20th win (15th by fall) when he pinned Iowa State's Quean Smith in 4:56. With the victory, Larson avenged two career losses to Smith, both coming last season.

OU fourth-year head coach Mark Cody said the wins by Reed and Larson particularly stood out because both had lost to their opponents in the past.

“It was nice because we had been beaten by the 174 pounder twice. We had been beaten by the heavyweight two times as well, so to turn those two matches around, that was pretty good for us," Cody said. "With our guys suffering a little between the ears because they had beaten us before - and they didn't just beat us, we got beat bad before - it was nice for us to come back and avenge those losses, which we believed we could.”

The Sooners return to the mat on Sunday as they welcome No. 20 Oregon State to Norman. The dual is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT. Tickets are available online or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (405) 325-2424 or toll-free at (800) 456-GoOU.
