NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Joe Castiglione and Head Wrestling Coach Mark Cody announced the Sooners' 2014-15 schedule Thursday.
The season is highlighted by two matchups with in-state rival Oklahoma State and a three-weekend, six-dual home stretch in late January and early February.
“I am excited about the level of competition that we will face this season. Each individual on our team will have an opportunity to wrestle several top-ranked wrestlers,” Cody said. “We are particularly looking forward to the month of January and February and our home slate. We are planning on making each of our home duals an event, and our goal is to fill McCasland for each and every dual meet.”
The Sooners will hold the annual Red/White Scrimmage on Tuesday, Oct. 28, inside McCasland Field House before official competition begins Saturday, Nov. 1, in a four-team dual against OCU, Baker and Shorter College. The event will be held at Lloyd Noble Center, with free admission. More details will be announced at a later date.
Two Bedlam duals are slated for this season, the first in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Sunday, Dec. 7, and the second in Norman on Sunday, Feb. 8. OU's schedule includes five additional home duals against NC State (Jan. 16), West Virginia (Jan. 18), Iowa State (Jan. 31), Oregon State (Feb. 1) and Wyoming (Feb. 6).
On Sunday, Nov. 2, OU will travel to Oklahoma City to compete in the OCU Open. The Sooners will then participate in the Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational on Nov. 8 in Brockport, New York, where they will seek their 16th consecutive title in the event.
OU's road lineup includes duals against Cornell (Nov. 22), American (Jan. 8) and Hofstra in (Jan. 11). Other road events are the Northeast Duals (Nov. 29) in Troy, New York, and the Reno Tournament of Champions (Dec. 21) in Reno, Nevada. The Sooners will participate in the National Duals (UTC) on Sunday, Feb. 15, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. If they win that dual, they will head to Iowa City, Iowa, for the National Duals Finals on Feb. 22.
Following regular-season action, the Sooners will compete at the Big 12 Championship on Saturday, March 7, in Ames, Iowa. Then, OU will participate in the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Missouri, slated for March 19-21 (Thursday-Saturday).
“When you're planning the schedule, you always have to keep in mind that the ultimate goal is doing well at the NCAA Championships,” Cody explained. “But I also believe that dual meets are very important to our sport, and the Oklahoma State dual last year proved that we have a big fan base. We hope to see all of them in the stands for every match.”
