Brooks Wins Fifth Big 12 Title

WACO, Texas - Senior Tia Brooks capped off her Big 12 career with another title, claiming the outdoor shot put championship with a throw of 18.51 meters at the Big 12 Championships at the Hart-Patterson Track Complex on Saturday.

The 2012 Olympian and defending national champion broke her own conference outdoor record of 18.22 meters set last season, winning her fifth conference title overall by over five feet.

"This is arguably the best throwing conference in the nation, so the people I compete against push me every meet," Brooks said following her win. "I never come in comfortable. Someone always wants to take your spot and anyone can throw well on the day so you have to be prepared. I just want to turn up every meet and try to do my best because it's going to take my best to win."

On the men's side in the long jump final, freshman Kaelan Washington flew to a third-place finish with a jump measuring 7.63 meters, his longest of the year.

The Oklahoma men's side will contend for the championship on Sunday, ending the day with 37 points, good for fourth place. Texas is at first with 60.5 points. The OU women's team currently sits in fifth place with 26 points with Kansas in the lead with 53 points.

Senior Claire McConnell finished second in the conference in the heptathlon, the highest finish ever by a Sooner in the event at the Big 12 Championships. McConnell put up a career-high point total of 5,385, moving her up to 15th in the country on the most recent national performance list.

Qualifiers for the women's team in tomorrow's finals include junior Erin Jones, crossing the finish line first in her heat of the 100 meters with the third-best time of the day at 11.63 seconds. Freshman Cessily Jones clocked the eighth-fastest time of the day to also qualify in the 100 meters at 11.68 seconds, a career best. The two runners also competed in the 200 meters but did not qualify, with Erin finishing just outside of the top eight at 23.97 seconds and Cessily finishing in a career-best time of 24.12.

Hilary Krein also qualified for the finals of the 1500 meters with a time of 4:27.57 and freshman Georgina Tamez-Reyna will participate in the 100-meter hurdles final after registering a 13.84 time.

For the men, junior Waymon Storey advanced to the finals of both the 100 and 200 meter races by finishing third in 10.60 seconds in the 100 and third in the 200 with a personal best of 20.79 seconds. Joining Storey in the 100 final will be junior Jeremy Rankin who clocked in at 10.65 to finish seventh in qualifying.

Sophomore Jorian Damen finished with the second-highest score of the day in the 800 meters and a new personal best at 1:51.91 to advance to the finals along with teammate Frezer Legesse who finished with the third-best time at 1:53.12. Freshman Allen Eke placed 10th, missing the finals by just over a tenth of a second with a time of 1:53.93.

Sophomore Ethan Baker also qualified for Oklahoma in the men's 400 meters with a time of 46.75 seconds, finishing seventh in the preliminary run.

The third and final day of the Big 12 Championships will start with the men's javelin final at 11 a.m. CT and will finish with the men's 4x400 relay at approximately 8:15 p.m. CT. Follow Oklahoma's official Twitter account for updates throughout the day.
