Friday was the first meeting in the series with OU and Alabama State ... Max White turned in his team-leading 14th multi-hit game of the year and seventh contest with three hits ... The last complete game shutout by a Sooner was turned in by Michael Rocha on March 3, 2011 at San Diego State ... The Sooners posted their third shutout of the season (4-0 at New Mexico on March 4 and 4-0 vs. Arkansas on April 10) ... OU has limited the opposition to five runs or less in 10 straight games ... The Sooner pitching staff had one walk for the second straight game and has issued three free passes or less in six of the last seven outings.

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma won a season-best sixth straight game on Friday with a 5-0 win over Alabama State at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Jordan John had a career-high 12 strikeouts and just one walk in the complete game shutout.

“He was terrific. He was solid,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway on John's performance. “I don't think our guys were really concerned even when it was just 3-0.”

The win improved the Sooners to 24-14 overall while the Hornets dropped to 16-24.

John (7-4) faced the minimum in six of his nine innings pitched and tossed 10 or fewer pitches in five of the frames. It marked the second complete game this year for John, who has lasted at least seven innings in all five of his starts.

“As the innings went on, I got more comfortable with my mechanics and where I was putting my pitches,” said John. “It also gets easier when everyone in the field is making plays behind me. It allowed me to throw pretty well today.”

The Sooners took a 3-0 lead after the first three innings and started the scoring with a two-out RBI double by Max White in the first inning.

The two-out hitting continued in the third inning as Cody Reine and Evan Mistich singled in a pair of runs.

The Sooners added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning on a sacrifice squeeze by Garrett Carey and produced their fourth two-out RBI of the game on Erik Ross' single to center field.

OU finished with nine hits in the game, despite the win blowing in from left field, led by White's three base knocks and two-hit performances by Ross and Jack Mayfield. The Sooners also stole four bases in the game, the most since swiping four against West Virginia on March 10.

“If you get sent on the road to a ballpark that doesn't favor the longball, you have to be able to play small ball and win,” said Golloway when talking about the win blowing in. “We were able to do that tonight. We stole some bases, had a delayed steal, a squeeze bunt, and a double steal, we did some things pretty well on the base paths tonight.”

Game two in the series is slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday in Norman and the game can be heard on the Sooner Sports Network KREF 1400 AM. OU's Jonathan Gray (3-4, 5.29 ERA) will start opposite ASU's T.J. Renda (4-3, 3.97 ERA).
