NORMAN, Okla. -- Hunter Lockwood singled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth as Oklahoma recorded a 2-1 victory on Saturday over Alabama State. The win clinches the series victory for the Sooners after Friday's 5-0 victory.
The Hornets' Ron Frost (2-5) gave up the single up the middle as Lockwood's base knock, his first of the game, brought home Max White from second base. White finished with a game-high three hits for the second straight game.
“Life is about timing,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “Luckily our timing has still been pretty good.”
OU committed three errors in the game but the offense rallied late and finished with 10 base knocks.
It marked the seventh straight win for the Sooners (25-14) who received three perfect innings of relief from Steven Okert (5-4).
“He pitched great. He's really adapted to that role (closer),” added Golloway. “He likes coming in with the game on the line. And that's been good for us.”
Alabama State (16-25) struck first with an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning off Jonathan Gray, who was charged with the Sooners' second error of the game.
Gray finished with eight strikeouts in six innings after facing one batter in the seventh inning and was relieved by Okert, who retired each of the eight batters he faced, including one strikeout.
“I've been through a lot of high pressure situations lately, so it wasn't too bad,” said Okert. “I trust my team behind me and I got a lot of balls put into play and they made the plays for me.”
The Sooners trailed for the middle part of the game and broke up the shutout in the seventh inning when Cody Reine reached on a fielder's choice with runners on the corners. A close play at second base marked the second out of the inning but Jack Mayfield scored from third after singling earlier in the frame.
Alabama State starter T.J. Renda lasted just 1 2/3 innings and departed the game with an apparent injury. He allowed two hits and was followed by three Hornet relievers.
The series finale on Sunday is slated for 1 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The game will be broadcast live on the Sooner Sports Network KREF 1400 AM.
