NORMAN, Okla. - It was the perfect combination of timely hitting and spectacular pitching as the 15th-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team shutout Iowa State 13-0 in five innings on Saturday afternoon at the OU Softball Complex. The Sooners (37-16, 9-8 Big 12) pounded out 15 hits, their most since getting 20 at Kansas in the second game of a doubleheader on April 6. Oklahoma's pitching staff was perfect for 4.2 innings and held the Cyclones (21-23, 3-10 Big 12) to just one hit.
After a scoreless first inning, the Sooners exploded for eight runs in the second. Dani Dobbs led off the inning with her eighth home run of the year and pinch runner Cierra Hughes scored off an error to put OU up 2-0. Chana'e Jones followed with a two-run shot of her own to give Oklahoma the 4-0 lead.
The Sooners managed to capitalize off the first of Iowa State's four defensive miscues, prolonging the second and allowing four additional runs to score after a pitching change. Jessica Shults doubled, Keilani Ricketts singled to score runner Javen Henson and Ricketts came around on Brittany Williams' two-run shot to give OU a 7-0 lead. Back-to-back doubles from Dobbs and Hughes pushed the advantage to 8-0 before a line out ended the inning.
Oklahoma added five runs in the fourth to stretch the lead to its eventual final score. Aided by three ISU errors in the inning, pinch runner Haley McGregor, Dobbs, Katie Norris, Destinee Martinez and Jones all came around to score and give OU a 13-0 lead.
After Ricketts (24-12) and Michelle Gascoigne pitched 4.2 perfect innings, Kirsten Allen gave up a single to Anna Cole to break up the no-hitter in the top of the fifth.
Rachel Zabriskie (14-15) went 1.1 innings for Iowa State, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk. Lauren Kennewell pitched the final 2.2 innings giving up nine runs on 10 hits and one walk.
The 13-0 victory was the third largest margin of victory for Oklahoma in a Big 12 regular season game and the three home runs in the second inning were the most for the Sooners in a single inning since belting out four against Arkansas during the 2009 NCAA Regional in Norman.
The two teams close out the series Sunday afternoon at noon CT. The 2011 senior class of Dobbs, Jones and Haley Nix will be honored prior to the start of the game.
