NORMAN, Okla. -- The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced five Sooners – Jarrod Patterson, Jordan Keller, Nathan Fernandez, Tyler Caldwell and Zack Bailey – to its annual Division I All-Academic team Friday for the 2010-11 season. Additionally, OU earned 25th on the All-Academic Team standings with a combined 2.991 GPA.

Oklahoma's five athletes tied with Cornell, which trailed only American's six, for the second most individuals named to the prestigious academic team. OU's team ranking was the second-best among Big 12 schools, trailing only Nebraska (3.1343 GPA) who earned eighth overall.

All five of OU's members were NCAA qualifiers, while three earned All-America honors. These individuals who were named All-Americans include: Patterson (125 pounds), Bailey (141) and Caldwell (165).

Patterson, a sophomore, and Bailey, a senior, finished seventh at their respective weight classes and Caldwell was an NCAA runner-up. Fernandez, a senior who competed at heavyweight, and sophomore Keller (133) round out OU's All-Academic team members.

Current Oklahoma head coach Mark Cody's former team, American, had another outstanding season, placing Top-5 at the NCAA Championships and for the second year in a row the Patriots finished No. 2 as an All-Academic Team with a GPA of 3.48.

For teams to be eligible for consideration, the team GPA is comprised of 12 student athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that were the entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. If teams had less than 10 entries for their respective qualifier, they may fill those spots with wrestlers that competed in at least one varsity dual during the season.

The Individual All-Academic Team also has qualifying standards by GPA and season record/accomplishment. To be considered for the award a wrestler must have accumulated a 3.2 cumulative GPA or higher, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule. Also, one can be honored for the All-Academic team with a 3.0 GPA and achieved All-American status this past season.
