NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma wrestling program's team physician, Dr. Robert Hines, was selected as the team doctor for the United States World Championships, which takes place in Istanbul, Turkey, Sept. 12-18.
“Being the head team physician for the world team is very prestigious,” said Hines. “It's the Olympics on non-Olympic years and I have been doing it for a longtime. This is just a continuation of my involvement with USA Wrestling and our collaboration to help athletes win World Championships and Olympic medals.”
Hines, better known as “Doc Hines”, oversees all medical needs and surgeries for the OU wrestling squad and has been with the Sooners for 17 seasons. Hines has dedicated years of services to not only the OU program, but to athletes all over the world.
“Doctor Hines is just absolutely awesome,” Jack Spates said. “He's got a great heart for wrestling, the kids, the University of Oklahoma and this program. He has been so generous with his time, resources and his talents; not only on the collegiate stage, but also at the high school level and the national stage as well. He is lauded throughout the country and the world and is well deserved.”
In 2008, he was chosen as a team physician for the United States wrestling Olympic team in Beijing, China. His duties included caring for all three disciplines of wrestling (men's and women's freestyle and men's Greco-Roman and Judo). He also helped staff the U.S. training room and medical clinic to assist athletes from all sports.
His world experience does not end there, as he also served as the team physician for the 2005 and 2007 World Championships of Wrestling and has been a part of medical teams in countries such as Iran, Budapest and Turkey.
“It's an honor to be working with OU,” Hines added. “I think that the program is headed in a great direction. It's really a privilege to help the Sooners be successful, develop our athletes and provide the best care we can for them.”
