NORMAN, Okla. -- Freshman Brian Brightwell drove in two runs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Red team a 9-8 walkoff-win on Sunday afternoon to clinch the best-of-five series. Brightwell came up to the plate with the bases loaded and one out after Chase Simpson was intentionally walked.
The White team jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and led throughout most of the game. While it appeared that the fifth and final game would be necessary on Tuesday, the Red team rallied from an 8-6 deficit in the final frame.
Senior Erik Ross, who hit .533 in the four games with six runs scored and eight base hits, was named the most valuable player of the Red-White Series. Ross had two hits and three runs scored in Friday's 7-0 win and came back to days later to score two runs on Sunday to go along with four base hits.
"I thought he played with great intensity today and led his team to victory," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "He seemed to play that way throughout the series and he set the tone for his team in that leadoff spot."
The starters from game one, Steven Okert (Red) and Dillon Overton also started game one but neither factored into the decision. The same held true on Sunday despite Okert allowing the White team build a 5-0 lead after three innings and Overton looking sharp with three scoreless frames to start the game.
However, the Red team finally got to Overton in the fourth inning for four runs, three earned, and then scored five more runs off relievers Chris Burgess and Jake Fisher (0-1), who was credited with the loss after giving up the final three runs in the ninth.
Clint Cooper (1-0) tossed the final two innings for the Red team and earned the victory.
A solo homer by White's Hunter Lockwood and a two-run shot by Evan Mistich got the offense rolling on Sunday and Max White and Caleby Bushyhead turned in a pair of impressive performances at the plate with three hits apiece. White finished with 10 hits in the four games to hit .625, which included two doubles, a triple and two runs scored.
Game three of the series was dominated by the Red team on Friday as Ross and Dustin Dishman led the way offensively behind Jordan John's four shutout innings.
Two standout pitching performances from Damien Magnifico (White) and Jonathan Gray (Red) was the story in game two on Wednesday. The contest ended a 3-3 tie after nine innings of action.
Offense was the highlight of game one on Monday which was claimed by the Red team in a 10-5 decision. Smith finished with three hits and three RBI on Monday and got the offense rolling with a two-run triple to the gap in left center in the second inning and capped off the scoring with a RBI double in the seventh inning.
