NORMAN, Okla. - The seventh-ranked Oklahoma wrestling team (9-1, 0-1) travels to Ames, Iowa, to take on the 15th-ranked Iowa State Cyclones on Friday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.

Oklahoma will attempt to snap an eight-match skid against the Cyclones dating back to 2003.

The dual will be held alongside the Cyclones 21st-ranked women's gymnastics team in their version of “Beauty and the Beast.”

“We're real eager about the challenge of competing against Iowa State,” Jack Spates said. “They are one of the premier programs in the America and finished third at last year's NCAA Championships, edging us out.

“Our guys have had great training. This is our first competition since school has started. We feel very well prepared and are excited about battling them on the mats.”

The Sooners are coming off an impressive 3-0 weekend at the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas, ousting No. 8 American (40-3), The Citadel (44-6) and Harvard (36-4).

Last season Iowa State (6-5) topped the Sooners in Norman by a 21-12 final on Jan. 22.

SPATES TO RETIRE AT END OF SEASON
Oklahoma Head Wrestling Coach Jack Spates, who is in his 18th season with the Sooners, announced Wednesday, Jan. 5 that he plans to retire from the position at the end of the current season.

"This is something that I had planned for quite a while," Spates said.

"I've been blessed by my tenure at OU.  I've worked with the greatest kids, athletic director and president.  I will leave with a smile on my face.  It's a young man's game and a sport that requires tremendous passion and energy and I feel God is leading me in another direction at this time."

That direction may involve ministerial work.  Spates received a master's degree in theology and education from Baptist Bible Seminary in 1980.
