NORMAN, Okla. – Nathan Fernandez of the seventh-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling team has been chosen as the Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Week, announced Tuesday by the league office.
It marks the second career conference honor for the redshirt-senior from Lawton, Okla., who has compiled a 16-2 overall record at heavyweight this season.
Fernandez, currently ranked 11th-nationally, helped the Sooners cruise past No. 8 American (22-14) after upsetting AU's third-ranked Ryan Flores, 4-2, at the Lone Star Duals. Fernandez earned two takedowns and an escape over the two-time NCAA qualifier to cap-off the win for OU. Later he defeated Harvard's Andrew Knapp by major decision, 12-2. Against Knapp, Fernandez had four takedowns, an escape and a nearfall in his match to lead the Sooners past Harvard, 33-8.
“We're very proud of Nathan that he has been named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week,” Jack Spates said. “He is very disserving, especially coming off a hard-fought battle over the third-ranked wrestler in the country. Nathan is an outstanding student as well as athlete and represents the University of Oklahoma with honor.”

In December Fernandez won the Cliff Keen Invitational after posting a 5-0 record en route to the heavyweight title. Fernandez's 77 career victories are second most on the team.
Fernandez and the Sooners will be in action Friday, Jan. 21 in Ames, Iowa, as they take on No. 16 Iowa State.
