TULSA, Okla. -- The OU soccer team improved to 1-1 after topping Tulsa 1-0 at the Hurricane Soccer Complex on Friday night. The Sooners won their sixth straight game in the series with the Golden Hurricane and improved to 7-2 all-time.

Freshman Samantha Howell posted her first career goal with the game winner in the 52nd minute. Dria Hampton set up Howell with her first assist of 2010 and fifth of her career to hand Tulsa its first loss of the year.

The Sooners were outshot 5-2 in the first half but battled back in the final 45 minutes with a 6-3 advantage.

"I like the way we responded in the second half and put some really good combinations together in the attack," said head coach Nicole Nelson. "It goes without saying that we would have liked to see more goals scored but you have to give credit to Tulsa. They were well organized."

After struggling on the road a year ago with a 1-6-1 record, OU is 1-1 this season. Last week, the Sooners came up just short of upsetting then-No. 19 Oklahoma State in Stillwater. OU lost that game 1-0.

"We were happy to come away with a win on the road," said head coach Nicole Nelson. "That is obviously something we stressed in the offseason and it's nice to see the early result."

Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire made four saves for her first shutout of 2010. Devonshire ranks fourth all-time at OU with seven career shutouts.

OU opens the home portion of the schedule on Sunday, Aug. 29 against Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. at the OU Soccer Complex.

"We are looking forward to returning home and playing in front of our home crowd," added Nelson.
