COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Danny Black drove in a career-high six runs as No. 17 Oklahoma clinched a series victory on the road after a 10-2 win on Sunday against Texas A&M.
"We've seen it several times this season, he can be a difference maker and he did that today," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway on Black's performance.
The Sooners (29-11, 8-8 Big 12) have won six of the last seven series meetings over the Aggies (22-16-1, 7-10-1), including two of last three sets in College Station. The Sooners came back and won game three after the 13-inning marathon on Saturday that saw OU come from behind for the 15th time this season in a 6-5 thriller.
"It's real important," said Golloway on the series win. "It was a big week for us following the loss at Oklahoma State and the series loss at Texas Tech. We needed to come back and respond and that started with the win over a ranked TCU club on Tuesday. But we needed to win a Big 12 series, especially on the road. I think this (weekend) is really going to help us as we get towards the final push of the season."
The key on Sunday was taking the game's initial lead, something that has eluded the Sooners in 14 of their 16 Big 12 games this season.
"We are to be commended that we have the character to come from behind, but what about the character to step off the bus, take batting practice, and be ready to go from the get-go," added Golloway. "We did a good job of that in the second inning today."
While Black paved the way in both the four-run second inning and five-run fifth inning on Sunday, Bobby Shore improved to 6-2 with seven innings of work. Shore is tied for the team lead in wins after striking out three Aggies and allowing two runs off eight hits and two walks.
Shore's opposition, Clayton Ehlert (2-4), was chased after two innings and four runs allowed, three unearned, in the start. Ehlert tossed 30-plus pitches in the second inning but none were bigger than the 1-1 pitch that Black drove to the gap in right-center field, for a double and deep enough to clear the loaded bases. The Sooners batted around the lineup for the 14th time this season after the onslaught in the second and Black broke an 0-for-6 trend with the bases loaded this season. Buechele led off the fifth inning after extending his hitting streak to 12 games with a single up the middle. Caleb Bushyhead plated him four batters later on a two-out single through the right side. The run was unearned after Texas A&M committed its third error of the game in the frame. That mistake cost the Aggies as three more unearned runs crossed the plate.
The scoring in the fifth continued as Tyler Ogle followed Bushyhead with an RBI single and that chased reliever Nick Fleece from the game. The third pitcher of the game, Estevan Uriegas, was greeted by a three-run bomb off Black's bat to give OU a 9-1 lead. It marked his second of the season, both this week, and the 13th time that OU has scored five or more runs in a frame this season.
Freshman Drew Harrison pinch hit in the seventh and blasted his third homer of the year to give the Sooners' their 16th multiple-homer game of the season (18 in 2009).
The Sooners outhit the Aggies, 11-10, on Sunday as Bushyhead led the way with three hits and Ogle and Black had two base knocks.
Jack Mayfield tossed the final two innings and allowed two hits to go along with his one strikeout.
Oklahoma returns to Norman to begin a five-game home stand starting on Tuesday, April 27 against Dallas Baptist at 7 p.m. OU and DBU met in Dallas on March 9 and the Sooners won 8-4. Following the midweek game, OU hosts Kansas State (April 30-May 2) in the final home Big 12 series of the season.
