NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 17 Sooners built a seven-run advantage after three frames on Monday and never looked back in a 14-5 win over Southern Utah at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Oklahoma improved to 35-14 overall and dropped Southern Utah to 22-19. The win was the Sooners' second straight after losing three consecutive contests last week to then-No. 8 Arkansas and Kansas.
“We just need to find wins, get our confidence and go,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “You see some teams get into slumps. Getting out of them is a difficult thing to do. We have to make sure that doesn't happen at this time of the year to our club.”
Matt Harughty, Tyler Ogle and Aaron Baker all turned in three-hit performances to lead the Sooners' high-powered offense.
In the first inning, OU continued its torrid pace from yesterday's 10-9 win in the finale over Kansas in extra frames. The Sooners didn't waste any time with a sacrifice fly from J.T. Wise in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Southern Utah quickly countered in the top of the second to tie the game but saw the game get out of reach in the bottom half of the frame.
The Sooners batted around the order for the 20th time this season and posted six runs off six hits in the second. The big inning started with Baker's run scoring double. Jamie Johnson and Harughty contributed RBI singles before Bryant Hernandez plated a run on a sacrifice fly. Casey Johnson capped off the frame's scoring with a RBI double to right field.
The run support was all Garrett Richards needed to earn his team-leading seventh win of the season. The junior lasted five innings and allowed two earned runs off six hits and a walk. Richards bounced back from a short start on Saturday vs. Kansas and recorded four strikeouts in the victory.
Steven Johnson's start was not as clean. The staff's ace did not fare well after Southern Utah had four games rained out over the weekend at Oral Roberts. Johnson dropped to 7-4 on the year after surrendering seven runs off eight hits in two innings of work.
In the fifth inning, Trey Sperring became the 14th different Sooner to homer this season after he hit a three-run blast over the fence in left-center field. The 80th home run of the season for OU extended the lead to 14-3.
OU returns to action on Tuesday night for the final midweek game of the season at UT-Arlington.
First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. and the game can be heard live on the Sooner Sports Network, KOKC 1520 AM.
