Men's Tennis Defeats NAU, 6-1

LAS VEGAS – The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team (5-3) won its first outdoor match of the season, defeating Northern Arizona University 6-1, Friday, Feb. 27, on the campus of UNLV.

“It was a good win today for our first match outside,” head coach Paul Lockwood said. “I thought the guys responded well with this win.”

All three of the Sooners' duos notched a win to give OU the early 1-0 lead heading into singles competition.

In singles action, OU soundly defeated all but one of the Lumberjacks' players, as NAU fell to 1-9 on the year. Junior Andrei Daescu continued his strong play at the No. 1 position, sweeping David Flodberg of NAU 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 5 position, fellow junior Blake Boswell gained another point for the Sooners by defeating Robin Pezzutto 6-1, 6-3.

The Oklahoma duo of sophomores David Pultr and Ionut Beleleu kept the winning streak going with defeats of their respective opponents. Pultr tallied a 6-2, 6-2 win over Chris Arena at the No. 3 spot and Beleleu ousted NAU's Jake Tracy 6-1, 6-1.

Freshman George Chanturia rounded out the winning streak for the Sooners with his win over Jaco Visagie 6-4, 6-2.

OU's lone loss came at the No. 2 position where senior Sergey Avdeyev was defeated by NAU's Andrew Reif in a super tiebreak set.

Next up for the Sooners is No. 75 UNLV on Saturday, Feb. 28, inside the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of the Running Rebels.

“Tomorrow is going to be a much better opponent in UNLV,” Lockwood said. “I know our players are ready.”

On the year, Beleleu, Boswel and Pultrl have each recorded 6-2 marks while Chanturia improved to 7-1 with today's win.
