AMES, Iowa – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team closed out the 2009 regular season Saturday evening, falling to No. 7 Iowa State in straight sets (-19, -20, -17) in Hilton Coliseum. Oklahoma finishes the regular season 18-11 and 11-9 in Big 12 play. Iowa State moves to 25-4 on the year and with a 17-3 mark in conference play.
Sophomore Suzy Boulavsky paced Oklahoma with 10 kills and added six digs. Senior Bridget Laplante totaled nine kills, hitting a team-high .304 and contributed seven digs. Laplante recorded OU's only block solo and added two block assists.
Sophomore setter Brianne Barker tallied 30 assists and 11 digs for her 22nd double-double of the season. Sophomore Caitlin Higgins led OU defensively with 16 digs. She added seven kills. Junior Francie Ekwerekwu added two block assists along with six kills. Freshman Maria Fernanda added 10 digs.
Victoria Henson led Iowa State with 12 kills, while Rachel Hockaday added 11.
The Sooners were unable to find offensive rhythm, committing 19 attack errors and six service errors. The Cyclones totaled 16 attack errors and four service errors but matched the service errors with four service aces. Both team posted three total blocks each.
Oklahoma learns its postseason fate Sunday afternoon. The 2009 NCAA Division Women's Volleyball Championship 64-team field is scheduled to be unveiled on ESPN News at 2 p.m. CT.
