NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- The slow start by his team didn't concern Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel. He was more impressed with his team's strong finish, as the Sooners broke free late in the first half and rolled over Mount St. Mary's, 81-57. The win gave the Sooners their most victories in non-conference play since the 1999-2000 season.
"I'm really pleased with the way we've played in the non-conference schedule," Capel said. "We've had a very challenging schedule with five teams that were ranked and four of which were not at home. To be 12-3 at this point, I feel good about the way we're playing. Now we've got to get prepared for conference."
Freshman center Blake Griffin hit 7-of-10 shots from the field and 12-of-18 free throws on his way to a career-high 26 points, but it was senior David Godbold who sparked a late first half run with back-to-back 3- point baskets. The game was tied at 28 when Griffin hit a pair of free throws to put Oklahoma ahead for good and Godbold then connected on his only two long-range attempts of the night to make it 36-28 at halftime.
At the start of the second half, Griffin hit another basket and his brother, Taylor, added a rare 3-pointer to finish a 13-0 run that gave the Sooners a 41-28 lead. Mount St. Mary's (7-8) got no closer than 11 the rest of the way, as Oklahoma (12-3) expanded the lead to 32 in the closing minutes. The Sooners shot 53 percent from the field, including 6-of-12 from 3-point range, and forced 19 turnovers by the Mountaineers.
Capel watched his team record its fifth straight win and saw his young big man dominate against a smaller Mount St. Mary's front line. The 6-10 Griffin punctuated his high scoring night with a thunderous one-hand dunk over two defenders after driving down the lane and getting fouled.
"Blake's a guy that puts pressure on the defense," said Capel. "Personally, I think he gets fouled every time down court. He gets beat up down there a lot."
"My teammates did a really good job of getting me the ball early," said Griffin, who scored 15 of the Sooners' first 30 points. "Thankfully, I hit more of my free throws than I have been, which helped."
Overall, the Sooners hit 25-of-39 at the free throw line, while the Mountaineers shot just 3-of-7. The visitors were called for 27 personal fouls and three technicals in the contest.
Longar Longar added 11 points and Tony Crocker 10 for Oklahoma, which was listed at No. 26 in the latest Associated Press basketball poll. Jeremy Goode had 12 points and Will Holland scored 11 for Mount St. Mary's.
