NORMAN, Okla.- Generations of Sooner legends congregated in Norman to celebrate the annual wrestling alumni weekend on Friday. Wrestling greats wouldn't be deterred by cloudy skies and occasional rain by hitting the links for the Annual Sooner Wrestling Golf Classic.
Westwood Golf Course was the site of this year's event as a shotgun start saw 25 teams and a total of 102 former wrestlers, families and friends compete for the championship title in an 18-hole scramble format.
Winning with a score total of 53 was the Brooks Wright team, comprised of Cary Acosta, Monty Klepper, Bob May and Wright. Tony Macia, Brad Findley, Jenny Foshee and Monty Cain shot 54 to tie for second with Brooks Wright, Cary Acosta, Monty Klepper and Bob May.
"It was a great outing," said Oklahoma Head Wrestling Coach Jack Spates. "It is always exciting to see all the Sooner greats come back and have a great time and show their support."
The day was concluded with a banquet at the Lloyd Noble Center for another opportunity for former wresters to share memories and enjoy dinner together.
"We had a ton of greats come back like former Coach Stan Abel, Danny Hodge, Gary Breece, Teyon Ware, Sam Hazewinkel, Michael Lightner, Dan Chaid and on and on," Spates said.
Former Coach Stan Abel, who leads all OU coaches with 279 career victories including the 1974 National Championship squad, said he always enjoys returning for this special event.
"It is great to see what all these guys have been up to and where their life is since they left OU," Abel remarked. "I always coached for the love of teaching these kids."
Former wrestlers in attendance gathered for a group picture at the end of the evening and many stayed to tell stories and reminisce about their memories as Sooners. Most plan on attending the OU/Miami football game on Saturday to conclude the alumni weekend.
"It truly was a great time tonight," Spates added. "For all of these guys to come back says a lot about what a great program and rich history we have."
