Sooners Shut Out at Hawai'i

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The University of Oklahoma soccer team (0-2) suffered a 1-0 loss against Hawai'i (1-1) to conclude play in the OHANA Hotels & Resorts No Ka Oi on Monday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

For the second consecutive game, the Sooners were on the losing end of a one-goal game (OU lost 2-1 on Saturday to Washington).

Freshman Ambree Ako scored the game-winner in the 68th minute off a Hawai'i free kick.

"I thought we played better today by creating numerous breakaways, but unfortunately we didnt convert those chances," said head coach Randy Evans. "After two games, we are still waiting to return to the form that we saw in the North Texas scrimmage. Now we welcome the opportunity to come back home and play in front of our fans".

After a slow start, Tenesha Duncan provided the Sooners with a spark off the bench by creating two breakaway opportunities in the final 10 minutes of the first half, but UH goalkeeper Kori Lu kept the match scoreless going into the break.

Before Hawai'i scored the contest's lone goal, it appeared that Duncan was set to put OU on top, but her shot deflected off the left post.

The Rainbow Wahine ended with a 19-7 advantage on shots. Duncan led all Sooners with four shots (three on goal) and Jennifer Nichols (0-2) made six saves in the contest.

Seniors Andrea Hurley and Kady Kelly and freshman Daphne Fitzpatrick were named to the all-tournament team.

The Sooners return home to host Michigan (1-0-1) on Sept. 1 in the 2006 home opener at the newly renovated John Crain Field at the OU Soccer Complex. On Sunday, OU will face Michigan State (1-1) in Norman at 1 p.m.

Friday's game is the start of a six-game home stand for the Sooners and a stretch that will see them play nine of their next 12 games in Norman.
