Sooners Shoot for Seventh Straight

Oklahoma Sends Three to Semifinals

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma Sooners advanced three wrestlers to the semifinals after session three on day two of the 2006 NCAA Championships.  OU currently sits in third place heading into session four this evening. Oklahoma still has five wrestlers alive with two athletes in the consolation bracket.

Sam Hazewinkel defeated Big 12 rival Paul Donahoe of Nebraska in the quarterfinals during session three Friday morning.  Hazewinkel won by a decision of 5-0 to advance to the semifinals Friday night to face defending national champion and No. 3 Joe Dubuque of Indiana.

No. 2 Teyon Ware had a strong showing on Friday morning defeating No. 7 Alex Tsirtsis of Iowa.  Ware won by a major decision of 13-4. This was the second meeting between the two 141-pound grapplers, Ware defeated Tsirtsis in the National Duals in January by a decision of 3-2.  Ware will now face No. 3 Cory Cooperman of Lehigh in the semifinals Friday evening.  Ware defeated Cooperman by a major decision of 13-2 in Norman on Dec. 3, and with a win the senior will extend his NCAA Championships win streak to eight and will be making his third appearance in the 141-pound final.

No. 4 Matt Storniolo defeated Mark Disalvo of Central Michigan in one of the 149-pound quarterfinal matches Friday morning at the Ford Center.  Storniolo won by a decision of 4-3.  This was the second win over Disalvo this season; Storniolo defeated Disalvo by a decision of 11-10 at the National Duals in January.  Storniolo will now face No. 1 Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota in the semifinals.

Joel Flaggert and Jake Hager will both be competing in the consolation bracket Friday evening in session four. Flaggert was defeated by Oklahoma State's Jake Rosholt by a decision of 4-0 in the 197-pound quarterfinal match. Hager was beaten by Steve Mocco of Oklahoma State by a decision of 9-3 in one of the heavyweight quarterfinals. Flaggert will now face Dallas Herbst of Wisconsin and Hager will face Tyler Shovlin of UNC Greensboro.

Session four begins at 6 p.m. inside the Ford Center Friday evening with semifinal and wrestlebacks competition.
