OU Places 11 Wrestlers at Missouri Open

Sooners Advance at Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma Sooners won their first seven matches of the 2006 NCAA National Wrestling Championships Thursday inside the Ford Center.

Will Rowe's (157 pounds) first appearance in the NCAA Championships turned out to be an upsetting one, only Rowe was the one pulling the upset, defeating No. 12 Steve Luke of Michigan. It took overtime to decide the final outcome with Rowe coming away with a 6-4 decision. Rowe will face No. 5 Ben Cherrington of Boise State in session two.

No. 2 Sam Hazewinkel defeated Cory Borges of Fresno State in his first round match of the 125-pound bracket. Hazewinkel won by a technical fall, 19-1. This was the second time the two have met this year. Hazewinkel won by a decision of 9-6 in Norman on Jan. 21. Hazewinkel faces Luke Magnani of Iowa in session two.

No. 2 Teyon Ware needed riding time to defeat Manuel Rivera of Minnesota in his opening match at 141 pounds. Ware and Rivera were deadlocked at 3-3 at the end of period three but with riding time of 2:18, Ware snuck away with the victory. Ware will face Edward Gutnik of Wisconsin in session two.

No. 4 Matt Storniolo defeated James Wodall of Penn State in the opening match for both wrestlers at 149 pounds. Storniolo, who transferred to Oklahoma from Penn State in 2005, defeated his old teammate by a decision of 9-2. Storniolo will face Robert Sanders of Nebraska in the evening session.

Senior Wes Roberts, who is making his first appearance in the championships, had a nice showing in his first match at 174 pounds. Roberts defeated Dan Miracola of Cornell by a decision of 4-0. Roberts will face No. 1 Ben Askren of Missouri in session two.

No. 5 Joel Flaggert defeated Nathan Moore of Purdue in round one of the 197-pound bracket. Flaggert, a returning All-American, defeated Moore by a decision of 9-2. Flaggert will face No. 12 Casey Phelps of Boise State in session two.

No. 7 Jake Hager dominated his opening match at 285 pounds, defeating Christopher Cvitan of James Madison by a major decision of 12-3.

The day's final session begins at 6:30 inside the Ford Center.
