CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The No. 3/3 Oklahoma wrestling team was defeated by Central Michigan 19-15 and the University of Iowa 21-15 and are now headed home after winning their first match earlier in the day at the 2006 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals.
"Obviously, we're disappointed with our overall showing, but I was pleased with the way our guys battled back," said head coach Jack Spates. "We split 10 matches with four starters out of the lineup against a great team in Iowa. We're disappointed, but the key thing is what we do with it. We have to use this to our advantage and we need to get healthy and come back and battle hard next weekend."
In the Central Michigan dual, the Sooners lost five matches while claming five others. Scoring for the Sooners were Sam Hazewinkel (125), defeating Luke Smith by a decision of 8-3, Teyon Ware (141), defeating Brandon Carter by a decision of 8-2, Matt Storniolo (149), defeating Mark Disalvo by a decision of 11-10, Joel Flaggert (197), defeating Wynn Michalak by a decision of 7-4 and Jake Hager (HWT.), defeating Bubba Gritter by a decision of 5-1.
"Obviously, Sam (Hazewinkel), Teyon (Ware), and Jake (Hager) were undefeated but they can all wrestle so much better," continued Spates. "I was very pleased with the way some of our young guys battled back. Jarrod King had to really dig deep to comeback and win and he did. The bottom line is we will take this and use it to our advantage in the future."
In the last dual of the day the Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the Sooners 21-15 with OU missing four starters to injuries. Snaring victories for the Sooners were Hazewinkel (125), defeating Luke Magnani by a decision of 4-2, Ware (141), defeating Alex Tsirtsis by a decision of 3-2, Jarrod King (165), defeating Eric Luedke by a decision of 8-3, Flaggert (197), defeating Dan Erekson by a decision of 5-2 and Hager (HWT.), defeating Matt Fields by a decision of 2-1.
The Sooners return to the mat when they host Fresno State and Cal Poly in a double dual on Saturday, Jan. 21.
