NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma head women's basketball coach Sherri Coale announced Friday that a pair of reserve players are leaving her program. Post players Casey Walker, a sophomore, and Kelly Lam, a freshman, have indicated that they will be leaving the squad at the conclusion of the 2004-05 academic year.
Walker's plans are indefinite although she is unlikely to continue her basketball career. Lam has told the Sooner staff that she plans to transfer to another school.
“We are always disappointed when players leave our program for any reason,” Coale said. “Casey and Kelly were each excellent students and we wish them the best in their future endeavors. Our program will continue to strive for excellence as we go about the business of pursuing championships.”
Walker, a 6-3 sophomore from Houston, Texas, played in 12 of Oklahoma's 30 games and averaged 3.6 points and 1.7 rebounds. Lam, a 6-3 freshman from Milwaukee, Wis., saw action in eight contests and posted averages of 1.4 points and 1.1 rebounds.
“I have enjoyed the past three years here,” said Walker. “I am grateful for the opportunities I've been given. I got to meet extraordinary people, make life long friendships and experience things I'll never forget. I'm appreciative of everyone who has supported me but now it's time for me to move on and finish my education and pursue other goals.”
“This past year was an experience I'll grow from and will take with me next year,” said Lam. “I'm looking forward to going back home so my family will be able to see me play. Everyone here has been extremely supportive of me through this very difficult decision. I respect the coaching staff and I'll miss my teammates.”
The 2005-06 Oklahoma team will return four post players. All-Big 12 second teamer Leah Rush will lead the group, along with Antoinette Wadsworth, Beky Preston and Krista Sanchez. In addition, the fall signing class yielded two high school All-Americans in twins Courtney and Ashley Paris. At 6-4 and 6-2 respectively, both should have an inside presence with the Sooners.
