OU Loses in Four to Kansas

November 08, 2005 | Volleyball

NORMAN, Okla. The Oklahoma volleyball team was unable to avenge its earlier season loss to the Kansas Jayhawks after dropping a 3-1 (30-27, 27-30, 23-30, 28-30) loss to KU inside the Howard McCasland Field House Wednesday night. The Jayhawks improved to 14-11 overall and 6-10 in Big 12 play while the Sooners, riding a four-match losing streak, dropped to 6-19 and 1-15 in conference action.

The story line of the match was the offensive output from the Sooners who only hit at a .136 clip compared to the Jayhawks' .242 mark.  While three Sooners tallied double-digit kills, only one in the entire OU lineup hit over .200.  OU's 33 attack errors on 55 attempts proved costly in the match.

Defensively, Oklahoma had a record outing at the net with 37 block assists in the four-game match which set a new OU rally-scoring record for block assists in a four-game match.  The previous record was 32 set last season against Texas Tech.

Sophomore Anna Stadel led OU's performance at the net, setting a career record with 10 block assists.  Stadel's previous career high was nine set against Texas Tech in 2004.

Contributing to OU's 19.5 total team blocks was junior Eliane Santos who tallied eight block assists while junior Laura Tomes added seven.

However, Kansas owned the Sooners in digs during the match.  The Jayhawks collected 61 digs while the Sooners were only able to collect 41.  KU had four Jayhawks record double-digit digs while OU junior Anna Monsen was the lone Sooner to tally double-digit digs with 10.

Junior Joanna Schmitt led the Sooners offensively with 21 kills while sophomore Sarah Weiland followed with 11 and Santos added 10.  Senior Gabriela Tonon hit at a team-high .375 clip while contributing four kills.

KU's sophomore right side hitter Emily Brown pounded a match-high 22 kills on an impressive .462 clip.  Additionally, senior middle blocker Josi Lima and senior outside hitter Paula Caten pounded 15 each for the Jayhawk offense.

However, it was KU's senior setter Andi Rozum who provided the offensive sparkplug for the Jayhawks after pounding nine kills on a match-high .750 clip.

Oklahoma will have its first bye weekend of the season this Saturday and will return to action next Wednesday, Nov. 16 for a rematch against the Iowa State Cyclones at 7 p.m. in Ames, Iowa.  The Sooners suffered a four-game loss to the Cyclones earlier this season in Norman.
