OU Places 11 Wrestlers at Missouri Open

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma wrestling team placed 11 wrestlers at the sixth annual Missouri Open Sunday in Columbia, Mo. Jake Hager repeated as the heavyweight champion with his victory over Dave Herman, 10-3, of Indiana in the finals.
“This was a good tournament for us to compete in and a lot of our young guys did a lot of growing up,” said head coach Jack Spates.
Hager was the lone champion for the Sooners who did not take Sam Hazewinkel, Teyon Ware and Joel Flaggert because they are scheduled to compete in the 40th annual NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the United States Marine Corps inside Oklahoma State's Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla., on Monday at 7 p.m.
Redshirt Freshman Will Rowe and Jarrod King finished second at 149 and 165 pounds, respectively. Rowe at 149 pounds lost to Gregor Gilespie of Edinboro College in the finals by a decision of 14-9. King at 165 pounds lost to Matt Pell of Missouri by default in the finals.
Also placing for the Sooners were Shane Vernon at 157 pounds who finished fourth and Jerome Featherstone at 157 pounds who wrestled unattached and finished sixth.
In the Freshman/Sophomore division, Chad Terry finished first at 149 pounds by defeating Dane Espinosa of Missouri by a decision of 1-0.
“This was a good test for our freshman and they stepped up and learned how to compete and battle at the college level,” continued Spates. “Chad Terry did an excellent job today and he is going to have a very bright future competing at this level.”
The Sooners return home next week to host the 35th annual Oklahoma Open on Thanksgiving weekend.
