NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma soccer team ended the spring season with a bang over the weekend winning 7-4 on Saturday, April 24, and 8-0 on Sunday, April 25, at John Crain Field.
In Saturday's victory, Becky Nelson dazzled the opposition scoring four goals, including a hat-trick at halftime. It was Nelson's first goals of the spring and she also added an assist in the 7-4 win over Dallas Inter '87.
"Becky was amazing and we put together some good combination plays behind the defense to get her open and she was able to finish the chances," said Oklahoma head coach Randy Evans. "As a team, we did a great job of finishing our scoring opportunities and I can't remember the last time 11 goals were scored in a game."
Also recording goals in the win over Dallas Inter were Kady Kelly and Lauren King scoring their first goals of the spring while Savannah Scott notched her second. Jayme Seetin got the nod in goal, as the Sooners had to sit their three goalies still recovering from injuries.
"Saturday was great, we were kind of shaky at first as we had to start a field position player in goal but we adjusted nicely," said Evans. "We knew we were going to give up some easy goals and would have to score a lot in return to win.
"Dallas Inter is a good club team and it was a very competitive game. We just did a great job of putting ourselves into position to score and finishing those chances."
In Sunday's game, the Sooner offense was stellar again scoring eight goals and was anchored by a solid defensive effort. OU came out on top 8-0 over the Norman Fury '87.
Nelson added another goal on Sunday while Lauren MacIver blasted a ball from 20 yards out for her second tally of the spring. Scott also scored as the Sooners had seven goals in the first half and then settled down on the defensive end in the second half to preserve the shutout. Kathryn Hergenhether along with Christy Kenkel, Jenny Jones and Becky Nelson all saw time in goal for OU .
"We were clicking on all cylinders on Sunday," said Evans. "After the seven goals in the first half, we knew we had to work on some other things besides scoring, so the defense really did a good job of keeping the opposition scoreless."
The Sooners conclude the spring schedule with a 4-3 record after battling injuries and adjusting to a new lineup. They will now prepare for the fall and build off of last season's success. Below is a look at the results and stats from the spring season:
