NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma soccer head coach Randy Evans announced today that Christian Michner will join the coaching staff for the 2004 season. Michner last served for the Del Mar Sharks Soccer Club as the assistant director of coaching and director of player development.
While working for Del Mar, Michner was also an assistant coach at Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, California. In addition, he served as a scout and assisted in training sessions for an Olympic Development Program in Southern California for three years.
“Earlier this month I was thrilled to sign a very talented recruiting class that I feel is going to make a huge impact on this team. I've gotten the same feeling over the last couple of days with the hiring of Christian,” said Evans. “He was a terrific player and has great knowledge of the game. He has also shown the maturity and organizational skills we need for that position. It's obvious that he is going to do a great job.”
A former four-year starter in college, Michner begin his career at Creighton University and then transferred to play his last two seasons at College of Charleston. Michner led the nation in assists his senior year at College of Charleston with 18 while scoring four goals as a midfielder/forward.
Born in Atlanta, Ga., he also has played on several professional teams across the country as a defender, including Major League Soccer's (MLS) Colorado Rapids, where he was a reserve during the 1998-99 season. Most recently, Michner was a member of the San Diego Flash Professional Soccer Club (A-League) for the 2001-02 season.
Michner received his bachelor's degree in psychology in August of 1998 from College of Charleston.. He is also certified by the United States Soccer Federation Coaching School and earned his “C” license in January, 2004.
“The decision to come and coach at such a prestigious university like Oklahoma was an easy one,” said Michner. “I am looking forward to working with Randy and (fellow assistant coach) Shanna Caldwell because I have a great deal of respect for them and know I can learn a lot from them. This was too good of an opportunity to pass up and I am really excited to get started.”
