Red Defeats White 22-13 At Red/White Classic

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Red team defeated the White team in Wednesday night's Red/White Classic by a score of 22-13 in the Hamilton Field House at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Okla. Twenty Oklahoma wrestlers competed in 10 matches during the evening to determine starting positions for the upcoming season.
“We're not ready for prime time. I'd give us a B or a B-,” said head coach Jack Spates. “It's early and we don't want to be ready for nationals at this point. There were some weights where we looked real good and there were those weights where we need some work.”
Scoring big for the Red team was Sam Hazewinkle and Justin Dyer. At 125 pounds, sophomore Sam Hazewinkel won by major decision over 141 pound wrestler, Erik Ford. At 184 pounds, sophomore Justin Dyer recorded a fall at the 2:22 overall mark over true freshman Tyler Garrett.
“At 125 pounds, Sam wrestled an exhibition against a 141 pound wrestler,” said Spates. “But I'll tell you what, Sam is tough as nails and he's ready.”
Also putting up points for the Red team was Mimi Miller (133), Matt Storniolo (149), Wes Roberts (165) and Jake Hager (HWT).
On the White team former national champion Teyon Ware defeated sophomore Chas Skelly by major decision at 141 pounds.
“Teyon looked phenomenal wrestling tonight,” said Spates.
“Bottom line is that this is a foundation and now we have to build on it. We'll know more after next week at our first competition,” said Spates. “We're building towards a climax which will hopefully be the NCAA Championship.”
The Sooners' regular season is scheduled to start on Saturday, Nov. 13, when they travel to Brockport, N.Y., for the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic. Oklahoma will host their first dual against UCO on Thursday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m.
