NORMAN, Okla. The Oklahoma wrestling team won six individual championships and placed a total of nine at the 34th annual Oklahoma Open at the Howard McCasland Field House on Saturday. Sophomore Sam Hazewinkel (125), sophomore Matt Storniolo (149), senior E.K. Waldhaus (174), sophomore Justin Dyer (184), sophomore Joel Flaggert (197) and junior Jake Hager (HWT) won individual championships.
“We are pleased with the way our guys wrestled, obviously we have some guys out, but the guys that did wrestle competed well and wrestled hard,” Sooner head coach Jack Spates said. “Joel Flaggert is getting better every time he steps on the mat, E.K. Waldhaus is dominating and Justin Dyer stepped it up.”
“We are pinning as a team and I think we are gelling well.”
Hazewinkel and Storniolo won their third consecutive individual tournament title of the year. Hazewinkel defeated Brandon Strong of Air Force by a 9-4 decision to win the title at 125 pounds. Storniolo won the 149 pound title by defeating teammate Will Rowe, 9-2.
Flaggert pinned Brenden McClean of Air Force in an impressive 34 seconds fall to win the title at 197 pounds.
The Sooners placed nine wrestlers at the tournament. Freshman Travis West placed second at 174 pounds, losing to teammate Waldhaus. Junior Austin David placed fourth at 197 pounds after pinning Jesse Forbes of Pima in 40 seconds.
The Oklahoma Open is also a tournament where junior high and high school wrestlers can compete to future their wrestling careers.
“The junior high and high school competition during this tournament has been great,” Spates said. “It has been some of the best of the weekend.”
The Sooners will host its first scheduled dual against University of Central Oklahoma at Norman High School on Thursday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. Oklahoma wrestling will continue its week with a home dual on Sunday, Dec. 12, against No. 1 Oklahoma State in the Lloyd Noble Center at 2 p.m.
