Oklahoma Places Nine Wrestlers At Missouri Open

November 21, 2004 | Wrestling

NORMAN, Okla. The Oklahoma wrestling team placed nine wrestlers at the fifth Missouri Open Sunday in Columbia, Mo. Sophomore Sam Hazewinkel placed first at 125 pounds for the second consecutive year and heavyweight Jake Hager pinned his way into the finals with three falls in 6:04.

“It was a strong tournament,” said Sooner head coach Jack Spates. “We did a lot of great wrestling and the guys did well.”

Hazewinkel (125), Teyon Ware (141), Matt Storniolo (149), Austin David (197) and Hager (HWT) won individual championships in their respective weight classes.

No. 9 E.K. Waldhaus defeated No. 15 Brady Richardson of Indiana by a 5-3 decision and placed second at 184 pounds after a tough match with No. 4 Pete Friedl on Indiana, losing by a 3-2 decision.

Senior Wes Roberts (165) sustained a knee injury during the second match of the tournament.

“Wes tore his LCL while competing in the tournament,” Spates said. “It is very disappointing thing to have happen because of how hard he worked to get back from his last injuries.”

The Sooners will return home and host the Oklahoma Open on Saturday, Nov. 27, in the McCasland Field House.
