Wrestling Wins Sixth Consecutive Brockport Classic

NORMAN, Okla. The No. 6 ranked Oklahoma wrestling team captured its sixth consecutive team title at the sixth annual Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic with a team score of 212.5 on Saturday in Brockport, NY.

Sam Hazewinkel (125), No. 3 Teyon Ware (141), Matt Storniolo (149), Charles Jones(157), Wes Roberts (165), No. 9 E.K. Waldhaus (174) and Joel Flaggert (197) won individual championships in their respective weight classes. Oklahoma also placed ten wrestlers in nine different weight classes.

“This was as fine a team performance that I have been a part of,” said head coach Jack Spates. “It is still early in the season, but in terms of how we wrestled, I am very pleased.”

At 125 pounds, No. 1-ranked Hazewinkel defeated No. 7 Mark McKnight of Buffalo by a 6-1 decision to clinch the title and win the Outstanding Wrestler award of the tournament. At 149 pounds, No. 6-ranked Matt Storniolo placed first with a 5-2 decisionagaist Pat Llody and was awarded the Most Pins Award with three pins in the day.

“Charles Jones really dug deep in the finals and Wes Roberts was masterful and dominated on top,” said Spates. “My outstanding wrestler was Joel Flaggert. He absolutely dominated and defeated Chad Hoare, a guy who defeated the last year's third- place finisher at the NCAA Championships, J.D. Bergman.”

Sophomore Justin Dyer defeated 12th ranked Luke Calvert of Army by a 6-3 decision to place third at 184 pounds.

Oklahoma will hit the mat next on Sunday, Nov. 21, when they travel to Columbia, Mo. for the Missouri Open.
