Volleyball Has Rough Outing At Texas

October 02, 2004 | Volleyball

NORMAN, Okla. --  It was rough from the beginning for the Oklahoma volleyball team who fell to the 18th-ranked Texas Longhorns in three straight games (11-30, 17-30, 28-30) on Saturday night at Gregory Gym in Austin, Texas.  The Sooners turned in their worst performance of the season, which made them easy prey for the streaking Longhorns.  Texas remains one of five undefeated teams in the top-25 at 13-0 and 5-0 in Big 12 play, while OU is 8-5 and 0-5 in conference.

Texas has been one of the hottest team in the country over the last couple weeks.  They came in with the momentum from a win at No. 5 Florida on Wednesday, plus a 12-match winning streak.  The were simply too much for the Sooners on this evening.

The Sooners turned in season lows in every area.  The Sooners hit .102 with just 32 kills in three games of action. The numbers weren't any better in assists (30) or digs (20).

Box Score

On the other side of the net Texas hit .382 with 57 kills and 55 assists. The back-row defense for the Longhorns produced 46 digs.

The lone individual bright spot for OU was Joanna Schmitt, who put away 10 kills on 20 swings while hitting at a .400 clip.  No other Sooner reached double-digits in kills.  Junior-transfer Gabriela Tonon had an eight-match streak of 10 or more kills snapped.  She had just six kills and hit at a career low rate of -.108.

Freshman setter Julie Chester made her Big 12 debut in relief of Rachel Jackson and tallied 11 assists.  Jackson finished the evening with 17 helpers.

OU has lost all 25 all-time meetings with Texas.

The Oklahoma volleyball returns to the Howard McCasland Field House court for a showdown with Missouri on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.   Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children.
