NORMAN, Okla. The Oklahoma volleyball team came out on the losing end of a sweep to Missouri on Wednesday night at the Howard McCasland Field House. The Sooners were outpaced by the Tigers who won 18-30, 23-30, 22-30 to improve to 9-4 on the season and 4-2 in Big 12 play. The Sooners dropped to 8-6 on the season and 0-6 since the begin of conference action.
Missouri jumped on the Sooners in the first game with a potent offense that hit .444 with just four errors in the session. OU had no answer for right side hitter Jessica Vander Kooi, who had nine kills in the first frame and finished with a match-high 17 kills.
The Sooners tightened the contest in the second frame but was unable to capitalize on numerous Tiger mistakes down the stretch. The offensive rhythm was gone in game two when the Sooners hit at just .053.
Box Score
OU was able to make things interesting early in the third game again but it wasn't meant to be. An extended Missouri rally mid-way through put the Sooners in the hole for good.
Freshman setter Julie Chester made her first career Big 12 start and her inexperience showed at times. She finished the match with 25 assists, which was partially responsible for the OU's low kill total of 36.
Sophomore Joanna Schmitt had nine kills, which was offset by 11 errors. She was one kill shy of a double-double with a team-high 12 digs. Senior libero Stephanie Tengram had 11 digs and a solid all-around match.
Senior Keri Coats was the most potent Sooner attacker with a .320 hitting percentage and nine kills. Junior-transfer Gabriela Tonon and Jennifer Adams took third-best honors with six kills apiece.
Missouri had a trio of attackers with 10 plus kills. Joining Vander Kooi were Shen Danru (15) and Lisa Boyd (11).
The Big 12 slate doesn't get any easier for the Sooners who travel to No. 5 Nebraska this weekend. First serve from Lincoln is set for 3 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on the O-Zone.
