The Oklahoma wrestling team lost a hard fought meet to No. 8 Iowa State, 19-16, Friday night at the Howard McCasland Field House. The Sooners started off the meet strong winning their first four matches and going up on the score board 13-0.
The Cyclones would bounce back with 19 unanswered points winning the next five matches. Oklahoma ended the night by winning the last match, but still lost the meet. The loss puts the Sooners record at 12-5 overall and 0-3 in Big 12 Conference competition.
One of the key losses tonight came at the 157 pound match when Charles Jones had to forfeit, failing to make weight.
“I thought our guys battled hard tonight,” Oklahoma head coach Jack Spates said. “We came in a little undermanned and that ended up being the deciding factor in the meet. For the most part I thought we wrestled hard and we wrestled tough.”
Defending national champion Teyon Ware suffered his first defeat of the year in the match. The No. 1 ranked wrestler's loss snaped his 35 match win streak that had carried over from last season. Ware lost to No. 4 Nate Gallick in the closest match of the night. There was no action taken by either wrestler in the first period and Ware scored the only point of the second. In the third period, Gallick won 3-2 with 50 seconds left after Ware scored an escape.
“Teyon came up a little short,” Spates said. “This probably is a good thing because he can go back to the drawing board and that's exactly what he'll do because he's a winner.”
Eleventh ranked freshman Justin Dyer started the night off at the 184 pound weight class with an upset win over No. 7 Kurt Backes, 9-6. The match was full of action which sparked the crowd to get behind their Sooners. Dyer began the match with a takedown at the 2:15 mark in the first period, the Backes escaped making the score 2-1. The score was tied after two periods at 6-6, which would be the last time Backes scored. Dyer scored three points by an escape and a takedown to pull off the upset and propel the Sooners into the lead.
“Justin really controlled his match,” Spates said. “He showed a lot of character and fortitude in winning that match. I'm very proud of him. That was a big win for us.”
Junior Austin David picked up his second win of the year with a 3-1 decision at 197 pounds. This was a slow match that saw the scored tied at 1-1 with 1:40 left in the match. David scored a takedown with five seconds left to come out victorious in a close fought battle.
At heavyweight, fourth ranked senior Leonce Crump defeated No. 16 Scott Coleman by an 11-4 decision. Crump provided the crowd with an entertaining match scoring five takedowns and not allowing Coleman one. Coleman's points came off of escapes after Crump had taken him to the mat.
Tenth ranked freshman Sam Hazewinkel bounced back from his loss against Arizona State last weekend with a decisive win over No. 17 ranked Grant Nakamura. Hazewinkel was on top of his game and did not allow a point to Nakamura. The first period ended scoreless, but Hazewinkel rolled off nine consecutive points to win the match by a 9-0 major decision.
The last win of the night for the Sooners came from No. 13 E.K. Waldhaus at 174 pounds. Waldhaus jumped out to an 8-3 first period lead and never looked back. Turner scored all the points of the second period to make the score closer at 8-5. Waldhaus scored another takedown in the third to make the final 10-7.
The Sooners will try to bounce back tomorrow when North Carolina comes to town at 7 p.m. at the Howard McCasland Field House.
