Horns Slip Past Sooners in Austin, 63-58

January 10, 2004 | Women's Basketball

Nina Norman scored 17 points, hitting three free throws over the final 22 seconds, and No. 3 Texas extended the nation's longest home winning streak to 27 games Saturday with a 63-58 win over No. 15 Oklahoma.

Heather Schreiber scored 11 points for Texas (14-1, 2-0 Big 12). Maria Villarroel scored 18 and Leah Rush added 15 points for the Sooners (11-2, 1-1).

Texas led 39-25 before the Sooners mounted a furious comeback and cut it to 47-45 with a 10-0 run. Texas got some breathing room with a 7-2 run that pushed the lead back up to 55-47 with 5:19 to play.

Villarroel hit a 3-pointer and scored seven straight points that pulled the Sooners within 59-58 with 1:10 left. Oklahoma had a chance to take its first lead but Caton Hill missed a 6-footer that rolled around the rim before falling out.

Stacy Stephens grabbed the rebound and was fouled. She hit the front end of a 1-and-1 and missed the second, but Texas got the ball back when Oklahoma knocked the rebound out of bounds.

Norman, who came into the game shooting just 52 percent from the line, went 3-for-4 down the stretch and hit 11 of 12 for the game.

Texas played without its best defensive stopper, junior forward Kala Bowers, who was out with a virus. Standout freshman Tiffany Jackson started in her place and scored the game's first basket, but also turned the ball over five times in the first half and finished with eight points.

The Longhorns made up for Bowers' absence with a standout defensive effort from reserve forward Mercedes Williams, who finished with eight rebounds.
