The Oklahoma wrestling team placed five wrestlers at the Missouri Open on Sunday. Red-shirt freshman Sam Hazewinkel defeated fellow Sooner freshman Mimi Miller by a 2-1 decision for the title. This is the second consecutive time this year Hazewinkel and Miller have met in the finals of the 125-pound weight class.
"Sam was magnificent," head coach Jack Spates said. Mimi Miller was also great. He beat the No. 5 ranked wrestler in the country at one point."
Freshman Jeff Ecklof placed fourth in the 149-pound weight class, after losing to the No. 1 seed Zack Esposito of Oklahoma State, by a 3-5 decision.
"Jeff Ecklof wrestled real hard and tough," Spates said.
The Sooners had two heavyweights place for the second consecutive tournament this year. Senior Leonce Crump wrestled his way to the finals and lost a close match to post collegiate Rapheal Davis, by a 1-3 decision. Sophomore Jake Hager also placed in the heavyweight class coming in fourth after a tough match with Will Gruenwald of Oklahoma State, losing by a 6-10 decision.
"Overall this was a good tournament," Spates said. "It was not as successful as last week, but there are a lot of things to build on."
Oklahoma will return home to host the Oklahoma Open on Nov. 29 in the Howard McCasland Field House.
