The No. 15-ranked Oklahoma wrestling team defeated Missouri Valley, 34-6, Thursday night at the Howard McCasland Field House. The Sooners recorded three falls, two major decisions and three decisions, with only two losing decisions in the victory. The falls were scored by Leonce Crump (HWT), Shane Kidd (141) and E.K. Waldhaus (174).
"We showed a lot of character," head coach Jack Spates said. "We won some tough matches coming from behind. We had some guys dig deep, so those are building blocks, but overall we've got to get a lot better."
Senior Leonce Crump (4-1) with a fall tonight moved to the lone spot in eighth place on the career pins list. Crump pinned Adam Nuru of Missouri Valley in the second period at the 3:38 overall mark. Crump needs eight more to pass former Sooners Danny Hodge and Josh Lambrecht for the sixth spot.
"Leonce did well," Spates said. "Leonce had a great tournament last week and was a few seconds away from beating a former national champion. He was aggressive tonight and had some good technique and he has the potential to be the national champion."
Junior E.K. Waldhaus (3-1) looked to move up the individual rankings from No. 13 in InterMat and No. 14 in the Amateur Wrestling News tonight with a fall over Keil Geise of Missouri Valley. Waldhaus scored his fall in the second period at the 4:14 overall mark.
Sophomore Shane Kidd (3-2) took advantage of his start with defending national champion Teyon Ware not wrestling by recording a fall in the 2:48 overall mark over Tyson Biddle of Missouri Valley.
"It was neat to see Shane do that," Spates said. "He is a hard-working kid, it's his moment in the sun now that Teyon's out and he made the most of it. He had a spectacular throw."
Oklahoma then recored two major decisions by Mimi Miller (4-1) and Justin Dyer (4-2) 12-4 and 10-2, respectively. Joel Tapler lost a hard fought match in double overtime to Shane Hall of Missouri Valley by a 5-6 decision.
Oklahoma will next travel to Columbia, Mo. to compete in the Missouri Open on Saturday, Nov. 22.
