The Bears, rolling along with a 6-1 record, have tied their best start under head
coach Nick Cowell. The 1999 squad, Cowell's first team at Baylor, also started
the season 6-1 and finished the year 14-7-1 overall. Junior transfer Monica Housden
became the second Bear this season (third in school history) to record a shutout
in her first start at Baylor. Freshman Tanya Sena blanked Louisiana-Lafayette
on opening day. One day after earning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors
last week, senior defender Tamura Crawley was named to the Soccer America Team
of the Week. With their loss Friday night to Arizona State, the Bears fell one
win shy of the longest win streak in program history, a six-game streak, from
Oct. 16-Nov. 1, 1998.
Colorado
A New Hampshire goal in the fifth minute of overtime Friday halted the Buffs'
home win streak at two and CU's 3-0 loss to Ole Miss on Sunday drops the Buffs
to 2-3 overall, below the .500 mark for the first time this season. Sophomore
transfer Nicholle Taylor netted the Buffs' lone goal of the weekend when she scored
in the eighth minute of play against UNH. The Buffs have five days to regroup
before they host the first Colorado Women's Soccer Challenge Friday and Sunday,
Sept. 20 and 22 at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex. Denver will play Maine at
2 p.m., followed by Colorado/Eastern Illinois at 4 on Friday. Sunday's match times
were changed to 10 a.m. MT (Denver/Eastern Illinois) and noon MT (Colorado/Maine).
Iowa State
Iowa State fell 1-0, Sept. 13, to Minnesota for the second consecutive time. The
Gophers topped the Cyclones in double overtime in Ames in 2001. ISU faces three
Big Ten foes this season (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa). Iowa State goalkeeper Beth
Chapman recorded a season-high six saves against Minnesota. The Cyclones take
their 2-0 record away from home to the UMass Classic. ISU faces Massachusetts
Friday and Fairfield Sunday. Both games will be the first in their respective
series.
Kansas
Kansas defeated both Arkansas and Tulsa for the first time in school history.
Freshman Caroline Smith leads the Jayhawks with six goals scored. Smith scored
four goals over the weekend including the game-winners in both matches. She scored
the game winning goal against Arkansas with 2:40 remaining in regulation. Freshman
Holly Ryder scored her first career goal as a Jayhawk against Tulsa. Junior Carmel
Kaplinger scored her first goal of the season for KU against Arkansas. Sophomore
Meghan Miller recorded her first shutout of the season and now has a 1.09 GAA.
Seven of the 12 goals scored this year by KU have come from freshmen. The Jayhawks
are 3-1 on the road this year. Kansas is 0-2 all-time against Evansville. The
Jayhawks will be playing Oakland for the first time.
Missouri
The Tigers are 4-1-1 owning two wins and a tie over Top 25 opponents. Missouri
won both the Florida State and Ohio State Invitationals. Goalkeeper Megan Duncan
earned her second shutout victory against Bowling Green. She made three saves
against the Falcons. Missouri's all-time season assist leader Adriene Davis continues
to add to her tally, she dished out two assists to help the Tigers defeat Ohio
State and Bowling Green. She leads the team with four assists on the year and
owns 21 career assists. Midfielder Kristen Heil scored her first goal of 2002
against Ohio State capitalizing on a deflected shot by a Buckeye defender that
she was able to rebound back into the OSU net. Megan Duncan has played 606 minutes
allowing six goals for a 0.89 goals against average. The junior has also made
40 saves and owns a 4-1-1 season record.
Nebraska
Nebraska wrapped up its season-opening five games that included three against
2001 College Cup competitors with a 2-2-1 record. The Huskers dropped their only
game last weekend to Portland, 4-0. The Pilots were too much for Nebraska in Portland,
as the Huskers were outshot 15-7. Christine Latham led NU with two shots on goal
for the game. Nebraska will play three games in Lincoln over the next six days,
facing Drake Tuesday, Creighton on Friday, and Indiana State on Sunday.
Oklahoma
Oklahoma (6-0-0) extended its school-record winning streak to six games with a
2-0 victory over previously undefeated Arizona on Sunday afternoon. The Sooners
began the weekend by defeating then-No. 18 SMU on Friday night, 1-0. With the
2-0 win over Arizona, the Sooners recorded their fourth straight shutout of the
season and fifth in the six games. Oklahoma has outscored its opponents 13-1 and
taken 50 more shots (101 to 51.) OU will travel to California to play two of the
top teams in the country next weekend. Oklahoma plays at No. 2 Stanford on Friday
and then meets defending national champion and No. 10 Santa Clara on Sunday, Sept.
22. The Sooners return home to open up conference play against Baylor on Friday,
Sept. 27.
Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State improved to 6-0 over the weekend, defeating Western Kentucky, 4-1,
on Thursday and Arkansas, 2-1, on Sunday. The game at Arkansas marked the first
time this season that the Cowgirls have been outshot by an opponent. The Lady'Backs
registered 14 shots to OSU's 9. Oklahoma State has outscored its opponents 18-4,
and has yet to allow more than one goal in a game. Senior goalkeeper Kat Doud
has registered 11 shutouts during her career and shares the top spot in the record
books with Chrystal Emerson.
Texas
Texas' forward line of Kelly Wilson, Kelly McDonald and Kylee Wosnuk continues
to produce as they accounted for both UT goals against No. 1 North Carolina on
Sept. 15 and have combined to account for 17 of the Longhorns' 32 points (53 percent)
through five matches in 2002. Sophomore defender Laura Kram has assisted on two
of the Horns' last five goals to lead all UT defenders in scoring to date. With
her goal against No. 1 North Carolina, junior Kylee Wosnuk now has 18 goals and
50 points during her career, which places her in a tie for fifth on those school
career lists. Kelly Wilson has now scored at least one goal in 12 of her 23 career
games and recorded at least one point in 15 of her 23 career tilts.
Texas A&M
When the Aggies lost to North Carolina on Friday night, Coach G. Guerrieri had
witnessed something he had never seen in his ten seasons at the helm of the Aggie
soccer program: a three-game losing streak. Since the program's inception in 1993,
no Aggie team has lost three-consecutive games. Only four times have the Aggies
lost two matches in a row. Of the six matches this season, A&M has played four
nationally-ranked opponents and has a record of 1-3 against them. All three of
the losses were outside the friendly confines of the Aggie Soccer Complex. Freshman
goalkeeper Katie Jo Spisak earned the first shutout of her career on Sunday when
the Aggies defeated TCU, 3-0. In all but one match this season the Aggies have
allowed one goal or fewer. The only exception was against No. 1 North Carolina
when the Tar Heels scored four times.
Texas Tech
The loss to the Miners on Friday night was the first time that UTEP had beaten
the Red Raiders in the school's history. The all-time series now stands at 5-1-0.
After the team's 2-0 start, the Red Raiders have been in a scoring drought. In
the last four games Tech has posted only two goals and been out- scored by a margin
of 8-2.The team's youth movement was obvious during the 2-1 loss to the New Mexico
Lobos, as the Red Raiders used seven freshmen (Lippert, Stephens, Knauss, Horn,
Jones, Gutknecht, and Marla Roberts).
