NORMAN, Okla. - Larry Turner, a 6-11, 235-pound post originally from Milledgeville, Ga., has signed a financial aid agreement to attend the University of Oklahoma, OU men's basketball head coach Kelvin Sampson said.

Turner, one of the nation's more highly sought-after big men last year, averaged 16 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks for Bridgton (Maine) Academy and head coach Whit Lesure last spring. Bridgton finished the season with a 14-12 record. Turner will be a freshman for the Sooners in 2002-03 with four years of eligibility.

"Larry is not only long at 6-11, but he's extremely athletic and can really, really run," said Sampson. "That's the thing people will notice right away -- he has great speed. He also has great hands. His strengths are his shot-blocking, rebounding at both ends and being a factor athletically. He's not an extremely accomplished offensive player and may remind some people of (OU junior center) Jabahri Brown. With Jabahri and Larry, we have two extremely long, tall, athletic big men who can be a major factor in college basketball."

Turner is the third freshman and fourth newcomer to join the 2002-03 Sooners. Fellow freshmen DeAngelo Alexander and Kevin Bookout were consensus top-50 national high school seniors last year, while sophomore transfer Rashaad Carruth was a McDonald's All-American in high school before playing at the University of Kentucky last season. Carruth will sit out the 2002-03 campaign and have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
