NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma sophomore Aldwyn Sappleton has been notified of his induction into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. It marks the second academic honor for Sappleton in the last month. In late May, he was named to the Verizon Academic All-District second team for district 6.

The Society recognizes first and second year undergraduate students who excel academically. Founded in 1994, the organization was established on the principle that with scholarship comes a responsibility to develop leadership and a duty to perform service.

Sappleton, who has a 3.78 GPA in political science, is a two-time NCAA All-American on the track, earning the honor last year on the outdoor 1600-meter relay and again this year on the indoor 1600-meter relay. He won the 600-yard title in the 2002 Big 12 Indoor Championships and was third in the 800-meter run at the 2002 Big 12 Outdoor Championships. He met the NCAA provisional standard for the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 800 and was a member of the 1600-meter relay which also met the provisional mark.

Sappleton, who is from James Hill, Clarendon, Jamaica, was named to the Big 12 Track and Field All-Academic team in May. After enrolling at OU in January 2001, he has been on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll every semester at OU.

He will travel to Jamaica next week for his country's senior national championships.
