NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma volleyball team lost its first match of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Laramie, Wyo., to Wake Forest in three games (30-26, 30-19, 30-13). WFU moves to 4-1 on the season while the Sooners drop to 1-4 overall.
The key to the win was the overpowering Wake Forest offense. The Demon Deacons hit .305 while the Sooners were only able to muster a .029 hitting percentage. Margaret Davidson led WFU with 17 kills and no errors on 20 attempts, hitting .850. For Oklahoma, freshman Alexia McWhinney hit a career and team-high .308 with five kills and one error on 13 attempts. Junior Lindsay Hoyt and sophomore Christina Barlow each had six kills while junior Denise Griffin had a team-high six digs.
Wake Forest was strong at the net defensively, recording 11 blocks compared to OU's two blocks.
The Sooners' next game is at 7:30 p.m. tonight against tournament host Wyoming. Saturday's action includes a 9:30 a.m match with Texas-Arlington followed by a 5:00 p.m. match with Idaho State.
