NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma volleyball team leaves for Laramie, Wyo., for their second tournament of the season, the Cowgirl Classic. The Sooners will face Wake Forest, Wyoming, UTA and Idaho State in the two-day, five team tournament on Sept. 7-8 at the MultiPurpose Gym.

"The last few days our focus has mainly been on ourselves, not on scouting the other teams," said Oklahoma Head Volleyball Coach Kalani Mahi. "We have been working on serving and working with our setters and middle hitters."

Oklahoma (1-3) enters the tournament averaging 13.38 kills per game and 15.19 digs per game. Sophmore Logan Pierce, who was named to the All-Tournament team last weekend at the Sam Houston State Tournament, leads the team in kills with 40 (2.44 kpg). Pierce is also tops in digs with 53 (3.31 dpg). Sophomore Christina Barlow leads the team kills in hitting (.304). The Sooners are ranked fourth in the Big 12 in service aces, averaging 2.19 per game.

"We open up with Wake Forest, one of the strongest teams at the tournament," said Mahi. "The tournament will be very challenging. We are playing solid teams from good conferences."

The Sooners play Wake Forest at 2:30 on Friday, Sept. 7. Wake Forest is 3-0 on the season, defeating Mississippi State, ECU and Northwestern in three-game sweeps last weekend. OU has seen the Demon Deacons only once in their series history, winning 3-1 in 1998.

Following the opening match, OU will face tournament host Wyoming at 7:30 p.m. The Cowgirls are 0-2 on the season, losing matches to Cincinnati and Furman. The Cowgirls swept the Sooners in their last meeting in 1999.

Oklahoma opens the second day of tournament action with a 9:30 a.m. match Saturday against Texas-Arlington. The Mavericks (2-3) are coming off a 3-0 loss to Baylor. UTA holds an all-time advantage of 25-11 against OU. The last match between the two teams was in 1995 when UTA won 3-1.

The Sooners end the tournament with a 5:00 p.m. match with Idaho State. This will be the first meeting between the two teams in the history of the OU volleyball program. The Bengals are 2-2 on the season going into the tournament.

Oklahoma opens up conference action at home at 7 p.m. on Sept. 12 against Texas A&M at the OU Field House. The #18 Aggies are 4-0 going into their own tournament this weekend in College Stations, Texas.
