NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma volleyball team (1-9, 0-1) lost its home opener to SMU 3-0 (30-24, 30-24, 30-18) tonight at the OU Field House. The Mustangs are now 4-5 overall.
""We needed to play consistent and take care of mental lapses," said OU Head Volleyball Coach Kalani Mahi. "SMU came in with a big lead in game one, and we did a great job of fighting back and putting ourselves in a position to win, but we let it get away at the tail end."
Freshman Candice Woods paced the Sooners with eight kills, a team high .200 hitting percentage and three blocks. Junior Jessica Barney led the team with 11 digs and 26 assists.
Offensively for the Mustangs, Beth Karasek had a team high 10 kills while hitting .429. Defensively, Tara Hatfield had 10 digs and three Mustangs had three blocks each.
"They (Sooners) worked hard but they need to be smarter and more consistent with the ball," said Mahi. "We need to have more focus and be more consistent offensively on the left side of the net."
Oklahoma opens Big 12 Conference action at home on Saturday, Sept. 22, against Kansas (10-0, 1-0) at 7 p.m. KU comes into the match on a 10-match winning streak.
