NORMAN, Okla. -- The 2001 Sooner volleyball team will begin practice this week at the University of Oklahoma Field House under the direction of second-year Head Coach Kalani Mahi and assistant coach Chris Mahi. The five incoming freshman will report today, Aug. 6, for orientation followed by the returners on Aug. 7. Practices are set to begin on Aug. 8.
The Sooners have two and a half weeks to prepare for their season opener, a tournament at Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas. OU will face Louisiana-Lafayette, North Texas, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Sam Houston State in the two-day tournament. The following weekend, Sept. 7-8, the team will be in Laramie, Wyo., at the Cowgirl Classic. OU will compete against Wake Forest, Wyoming, Texas-Arlington and Idaho State.
The Sooners open up conference action at home with a match against Texas A&M at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
The 2001 squad will be comprised of two returning starters, junior Lindsay Hoyt and sophomore Logan Pierce. Junior Jessica Barney, sophomore Christina Barlow and freshman redshirt Alexia McWhinney completes the group of returners. Junior Denise Griffin is the lone transfer coming from the College of Eastern Utah. She has been enrolled here since spring 2000. The five incoming freshman include setter Leanne Chen, outside hitter Emily Kincaid, middle hitter Gretchen French, outside hitter Sheena Wherling and middle hitter Candice Woods. Woods will be joining the team in late August or early September because she is competing with the Canadian Junior National Team.
